Marlton is an unincorporated community within New Jersey’s Evesham
Township. The community of Marlton was founded in 1676 by a group of English
and Welsh farmers, who named the area after the marl clay present in the
soil. Evesham Township, originally formed as Eversham in 1688, included
areas from surrounding townships and was incorporated in 1798.
Marlton continued to extract the marl clay from its soil for export through
the 1930s. The community was also the site of a missile base for Project
Nike, an anti-aircraft missile system developed during the Cold War. Today,
Marlton’s population is 10,133 and the community covers a total
of 3.2 square miles.
